Customer Testimonial Video: 5 Questions for a 60-Second Clip

“I thought I’d get a lecture about my damaged hair. I didn’t.” A salon customer said that after a creambath in chair number two. An honest line like that comes from asking her the right question. Yesterday was Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge Day), a day about speaking up. This week, give your own customers 60 seconds to do the same in a customer testimonial video.

The trouble is that most owners try it once with “How was your experience with us?”. That question is too wide, so a customer with a camera suddenly pointed at them reaches for the safest answer: “good service, nice place, recommended”. The video never gets posted. Testimonials prospects actually believe have a real problem at the start and a specific detail in the middle, like the therapist’s name or how many minutes they waited. Details like these are hard to make up, and viewers can tell. We cover the psychology in our piece on social proof.

This article covers one thing: usable footage in a single sitting, then a weekly routine that doesn’t eat your time, for salons, cafes and other non-medical services. For the bigger picture, see our word of mouth marketing playbook.

Quick Summary

  • Customers freeze in a customer testimonial video when you ask them to “give a testimonial”. They loosen up when asked to tell a story, and the five questions below pull it out.
  • The question order matches the video order: before, decision, moment, result, recommendation. Editing becomes mostly trimming.
  • Kit: your current phone, a tabletop tripod and a clip-on mic, Rp 250,000 to Rp 500,000 all in.
  • About 50 minutes per video, plus a one-time setup of about an hour.
  • Indonesia’s PDP Law requires explicit consent (written or recorded). A saved WhatsApp chat is the easiest record, and the template is below.

5 Customer Testimonial Video Questions, in Order, and Why Each Works

Before you hit record, give the customer one rule: “Please answer in full sentences, as if I hadn’t asked the question.” Your voice gets cut later. If the customer just says “yes, fast”, the clip means nothing without your question. If they say “The service was quick, I only waited ten minutes”, the clip stands on its own.

Copy this list into your phone notes. Ask in whatever language your customer is most comfortable in, which for most will be Bahasa Indonesia.

WARM-UP (not used in the video, 30 seconds)
"So what did you come in for today?"

1. PROBLEM
"Before you came here, what was bothering you or making
you hesitate about [service]?"

2. DECISION
"So why did you end up choosing [business name]?"

3. MOMENT
"From today's visit, what part stuck with you the most?"

4. RESULT
"What's different now, compared with before you came?"

5. RECOMMENDATION
"If a friend was still on the fence, what would you tell
them?"

If the customer looks nervous, send the five questions (no sample answers) via the /questions quick reply five minutes before recording.

1. Problem. The prospect watching is sitting in that “before” state right now, and people complain more fluently than they praise, so the ice breaks fast. If the answer is short, nudge once: “What did that look like?”

2. Decision. This is the real reason people buy, and it’s often not what you assume: you’re sure it’s the price, the customer says it’s because you’re near their kid’s school. Note it down for your next ad.

3. Moment. “Stuck with you the most” forces the customer to pick one scene, and scenes are full of detail. An answer that works as an opening line: “Before she touched anything, Mbak Dewi asked if my hair had ever been bleached.”

4. Result. The customer closes the story with what changed. At a salon that’s usually the hair. At a cafe it can be “now I work from here every Wednesday.” Don’t lead with “so you’re happier now, right?” Let them pick their own words.

5. Recommendation. Now they’re talking to a friend, so the tone relaxes. A line from this answer almost always becomes your closing.

One extra trick: after question five, stay silent for three seconds before saying “that’s it.” Many customers fill the gap with their best line.

When this doesn’t work: a customer who clearly doesn’t want to be filmed. Don’t talk them into it. Ask someone else this week.

Picking the Right Customer (5 Minutes)

Pick a regular who has visited at least twice, has praised you unprompted, and isn’t in a hurry, outside rush hour. Ask right after the service, when they’re visibly pleased. If you already have a habit of asking for Google reviews at the happy moment, add one line: “If you don’t mind, could I film you for two minutes? Just five questions.”

Phone Shooting Checklist (5-Minute Setup, 7-Minute Recording)

Whoever already shoots product photos on their phone can do this, as long as the checklist and the spot stay the same every week. The first session takes about 15 minutes. After two or three rounds, setup drops to around 5.

StepDetailTime
Pick one fixed spotA corner of your shop that faces a window. Use the same spot every week.Once, at the start

Do Not DisturbSo a call or notification doesn’t cut the recording.10 sec
FramingChest up, eyes on the top third. Place captions in the lower middle, not the bottom fifth, which Reels and TikTok cover with the username and buttons. The customer looks at you beside the phone, not into the lens.30 sec
5 seconds of silenceStart recording, wait five seconds, then ask. Makes editing easier.5 sec
InterviewWarm-up plus the five questions.4–5 min
B-rollAfter the interview, shoot a few 5-second clips: staff hands at work, the product, the room.2 min

What we recommend for a salon or cafe:

  • Tabletop tripod or clamp phone holder: Rp 80,000 to Rp 150,000.
  • Wireless clip-on mic: Rp 150,000 to Rp 350,000 for entry-level brands. Match it to your phone’s port (USB-C or Lightning). If the budget only stretches to one item, buy this. Viewers forgive a slightly soft picture but scroll away the second the audio echoes.
  • Lighting: skip it if your spot faces a window and you film during the day.

The 60-Second Edit Structure (20 Minutes in CapCut)

Your raw footage will run 3 to 5 minutes. Because the questions were already in order, editing is just picking the best clip for each section. The free version of CapCut is enough.

0–3 sec HOOK
Strongest line from answer 3 or 4.
Big on-screen text. No logo, no greeting.
(Don't repeat it in Moment + Result.)

3–15 sec PROBLEM (answer 1)
One or two sentences. Cut every "umm".

15–25 sec DECISION (answer 2)
Fine to lay B-roll of your shop over this.

25–42 sec MOMENT + RESULT (answers 3 and 4)
The longest section. Drop in B-roll of staff
hands or the product when they mention it.

42–54 sec RECOMMENDATION (answer 5)
Back to the customer's face, no B-roll.

54–60 sec CLOSE
Customer's first name + the service they had.
One line of text: how to book or order.

Two editing rules we hold our clients to:

  1. Captions are mandatory. Plenty of people watch on mute in public. In CapCut, open Text (or Captions, depending on version) in the bottom toolbar and pick Auto captions. Then read through every line. The software regularly mishears menu names and mixed Indonesian-English speech.
  2. Keep music under the voice. If you add background music, pull it well below the customer’s voice. For business content, popular songs generally aren’t licensed for commercial use. On Instagram and Facebook, follow Meta’s music guidelines.2 On TikTok, business accounts use the Commercial Music Library, whose license covers TikTok only.3

Trimming “umm” is fine. Splicing sentences so the meaning changes is dishonest, and the customer will notice.

One video works on Reels, TikTok, WhatsApp Status and your website. On the website, put it next to the booking button, where trust signals do the most work. If your market skews young, this is the evidence they look for, as covered in what Gen Z checks before buying.

A customer’s face and voice are personal data. Indonesia’s Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection says consent-based processing needs a clear purpose, consent can be written or recorded, and the person can withdraw it, after which processing must stop within 72 hours (the law says 3 x 24 hours).4 Copyright Law Article 12 also bars using a person’s portrait (photo) in commercial advertising without their written approval, which matters for thumbnails and stills pulled from your video.5

So “they said it was fine earlier” doesn’t cut it. Send this over WhatsApp, wait for the reply, then label the chat “Video Consent”. Send it in Bahasa if the customer prefers, as long as they understand every line. No paid ads planned? Delete the ads line and the AGREE + ADS option.

Hi [Name], thank you for agreeing to be filmed for a
[Business Name] testimonial video today.

To be clear, here's what we'll do:
- Recording: video of your face and voice, about 3–5 minutes,
edited into a short video of 60 seconds or less.
- Where it appears: Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp Status and
  the [Business Name] website.
- Paid ads on Instagram/Facebook: only if you reply
  AGREE + ADS.
- Name shown: [first name only]. Tell us if you'd prefer
your full name or no name.
- How long: until you ask us to remove it. We review it
  after 2 years.
- We won't change the meaning of anything you say.
- You can ask us to remove the video at any time, just by
messaging this number. We'll stop using it and take it
down from our accounts within 72 hours of receiving
  your message.
- Copies that other people have already reshared outside our
accounts may not be fully recoverable.

Reply AGREE to let us post it on our own pages.
Reply AGREE + ADS if we can also use it in paid ads.
If you'd like anything changed, just tell us first.

[Your name], [Business Name]

Practical notes:

  • Ask about paid ads up front. Plenty of customers are fine with your Instagram but not an ad, and asking again two weeks later is awkward.
  • Minors: the PDP Law requires consent from a parent or guardian for a child’s personal data.4 Consider not showing the child’s face at all.
  • Clinics and healthcare services: according to the Ministry of Health, Minister of Health Regulation 1787/2010, Article 5, bars healthcare ads and publications from carrying testimonials, so skip this format with patients and film behind-the-scenes clips instead (the registration flow, the waiting room).6 Talk to a legal adviser before posting anything that features a patient.

Last step: record consent at the start of the video too. “Can you confirm you’re happy for this video to be used to promote [Business Name]?” Those five seconds never make the cut, but they back up the chat.

Worked Example: A 4-Chair Salon in Gading Serpong

Picture a four-chair hair salon in Gading Serpong, Tangerang. Average transaction Rp 350,000, mostly local mothers and office workers. The owner, call her Bu Ratna, has no time for content. Here’s the system she sets up once and leaves running.

One-time setup (about 60 minutes, Rp 370,000):

  • Buy a tabletop tripod for Rp 120,000 and a clip-on mic for Rp 250,000.
  • Choose the filming spot: the waiting chair by the front window.
  • Save the five questions and the consent template as two WhatsApp Business quick replies, for example /questions and /videoconsent.
  • Assign one senior stylist as the interviewer. Bu Ratna stays off camera herself. The moment the owner appears, viewers read it as an ad.

Weekly routine (about 50 minutes per video):

DayTaskWhoTime
MondayPick one regular from that week’s bookingsStaff5 min
Visit daySend /videoconsent (plus /questions if the customer seems nervous), wait for the reply, set up, record 5 questions + B-rollStaff20 min
ThursdayEdit in CapCut using the 60-second structureStaff20 min
ThursdayCheck captions, approve, postBu Ratna5 min

The Thursday edit slot matters. Footage not edited within a week usually never gets edited, so calendar it like restocking.

As a thank-you, the customer gets a Rp 50,000 hair mask voucher for their next visit, handed over after the recording however it went. Promise it up front as a condition and the answers drift into forced praise.

Out of four recordings a month, usually one isn’t good enough because the answers were too brief or the audio got messy. Don’t post it to fill the slot. Save its best line for a caption.

The math (assumptions, so plug in your own numbers): the Rp 50,000 voucher is its retail value, while the hair mask product itself costs far less, say Rp 15,000–20,000. So four vouchers really cost about Rp 80,000 a month, plus roughly 3 hours of staff time. At about Rp 30,000 an hour, those 3 hours come to about Rp 90,000, for a real total of around Rp 170,000 a month. At a gross margin of around 50% on a Rp 350,000 average transaction (Rp 175,000), one new customer a month who comes in because of the videos covers all of it, and their second visit is profit. The Rp 370,000 kit is a one-off, and the margin from about three extra new customers (beyond the one covering monthly costs) pays it back.

To know whether the videos are working, add one question at booking: “How did you hear about us?” Note answers like “video/Instagram/WA Status” in the booking book (10 seconds per customer).

After three months, assuming one in four recordings doesn’t make the cut, the salon has about 9 usable videos from 9 different customers (plus 3 quotes for captions), enough to keep WhatsApp Status topped up and to feed broadcasts to existing customers.

How Eranya Digital Can Help

Testimonial videos earn the most where prospects are making up their minds. We help local businesses set up their service pages with a fixed spot for testimonial videos next to the booking button, plus a simple posting routine for your Google profile, so each new video has an obvious home.

If you already have a few videos and aren’t sure where they belong, book a strategy session with our team. We’ll look together at which page needs the proof most.

Customer Testimonial Videos: Common Questions

What questions should I ask in a customer testimonial video?

Five questions work best when asked in this order: (1) Before you came here, what was bothering you or making you hesitate? (2) Why did you end up choosing us? (3) What part of today's visit stuck with you most? (4) What's different now? (5) If a friend was still on the fence, what would you tell them? The order follows a story arc of before, decision, moment, result and recommendation, so the raw footage is already close to a finished 60-second video.

Do I need written permission to use a customer's testimonial video?

Yes, you need explicit consent, and it must be written or recorded. In Indonesia, a customer's face and voice count as personal data under Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection, and using them on the basis of consent requires a clearly stated purpose. Copyright Law Article 12 also bars using a person's portrait (photo) in commercial advertising without their written approval, which matters for thumbnails and stills pulled from your video. The practical route: send a WhatsApp message that says exactly where the video will appear, ask the customer to reply AGREE, and keep that chat. Tell them they can withdraw at any time.

How long should a testimonial video be for Instagram Reels and TikTok?

In our experience with clients, 45 to 60 seconds is a realistic length for a testimonial on Reels, TikTok and WhatsApp Status: long enough for one complete story from problem to result, short enough not to drag. The opening seconds carry a lot of weight, so start with the customer's strongest line and skip the logo and greeting. Record 3 to 5 minutes of raw footage so you have material to choose from.

How do I make a testimonial video that doesn't look staged?

Don't give the customer a script. Share the questions only, never sample answers. Ask them to answer in full sentences while looking at the interviewer sitting beside the phone. Film inside your own shop using window light, and leave in small pauses and laughs. What makes a testimonial believable is specific detail, such as the menu item, the therapist's name or how long the wait was.
