Cold email for link requests is popular in international SEO circles — but in Indonesia, the response rate is close to zero. Most recipients ignore it or flag it as spam.
The good news: there are far more effective approaches for building quality local backlinks, and most of them leverage existing networks and communities — without sending a single cold email.[^1]
This is a 60-day week-by-week roadmap that any Indonesian local business can execute.
Before You Start
- Duration: 60 days (8 weeks)
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- You’ll need: A business email account, Google Search Console access, a few hours per week
Weeks 1–2: Foundation Links
Step 1 — Register with Kadin / HIPMI / IWAPI
Kamar Dagang dan Industri (Kadin), Himpunan Pengusaha Muda Indonesia (HIPMI), and Ikatan Wanita Pengusaha Indonesia (IWAPI) are official business associations with high-DA websites that publish member directories — and a member listing with your website URL is a valuable backlink.
How to get listed:
- Join your local Kadin chapter as a member
- Ensure your member profile includes a link to your website
- Some regional Kadin chapters maintain publicly-accessible business directories
Joining these associations isn’t just about links — it also opens access to business networks, events, and partnership opportunities that generate more organic backlinks over time.
Step 2 — Submit to .go.id Directories
Backlinks from Indonesian government domains (.go.id) are among the most underrated SEO assets available to local businesses. Municipal websites, industry departments (Dinas Perindustrian), tourism offices, and regional government bodies often maintain “Local Business Directory” or “Featured SME” pages that link to business websites.
How to find them:
Search Google for: site:.go.id "[your city]" "UMKM" OR "direktori usaha"
Then contact the relevant department (usually Dinas Perindustrian or Koperasi dan UKM) to register your business. Having an active NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha) from OSS significantly improves your acceptance chances.
Step 3 — Join Industry-Specific Associations
Every industry has official associations that publish member directories — highly relevant both topically and geographically:
- Restaurants / Hotels: PHRI (Perhimpunan Hotel dan Restoran Indonesia)
- Clinics / Health: IDI regional chapters or Persatuan Klinik Indonesia
- Property: REI (Real Estate Indonesia) regional chapter
- Automotive: GAIKINDO or regional auto workshop associations
- Tourism: ASITA (Association of The Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies)
Weeks 3–4: Content-Driven Links
Step 4 — Create a Locally-Useful Resource and Pitch It
Build something that’s naturally worth linking to — what SEOs call a linkable asset. For local businesses, content that genuinely helps the local community attracts links most naturally.
Linkable asset examples by industry:
- Dental clinic in Bandung: “Complete Guide to BPJS Kesehatan in Bandung 2026”
- Motorcycle workshop in Surabaya: “Transparent Motorcycle Service Prices in Surabaya 2026”
- Restaurant in Yogyakarta: “Map of Legendary Yogyakarta Culinary Spots Worth Trying”
- Property agent in Jakarta: “First Home Buyer’s Guide to Jakarta 2026”
After publishing, share to relevant local Facebook groups, WhatsApp business groups, and contact local media editorial desks with a news pitch (not a cold link request).
Step 5 — Write a “Best of [City]” Roundup Post
Create content recommending other local businesses in your city — not direct competitors, but complementary businesses. When you mention other businesses positively, there’s a reasonable chance they’ll reciprocate with a mention or link.
Example: A salon in Bandung writes “10 Best Pre-Wedding Photo Locations in Bandung” and then notifies the photographers mentioned. Contact them via Instagram or WhatsApp — many will share or link back.
Step 6 — Sponsor a Local Event for a Link
Many local event organisers — food festivals, SME bazaars, community sports events — list their sponsors on their websites with links to sponsor websites.
Relevant events in Indonesia:
- Ramadan bazaars and Lebaran festivals
- 17 Agustus celebrations at kecamatan / kelurahan level
- City culinary festivals
- Community sports competitions
- Local business workshops and seminars
Budget required: Small community event sponsorships typically cost Rp 500,000–5,000,000 — far cheaper than paid link-building services, with longer-lasting results.
Weeks 5–6: PR & Partnership Links
Step 7 — Get Covered by Local Media
Indonesian local media — Tribun[City], Radar[City], IDN Times regional, detikcom regional, Kompas regional — have very high domain authority and actively seek compelling local content.
Story angles local media typically accept:
- Inspiring local SME growth story
- Unique innovation or service not seen in that city before
- Local data or survey results (“Our workshop surveyed 500 motorcycles in Bandung, here’s what we found”)
- Community event or social programme
- Business milestones: 10th anniversary, new branch opening
How to pitch: Find the editorial email or reporter contact on the media’s website (usually under “About” or “Contact”). Send a 3–4 sentence pitch explaining the story angle and why it’s relevant for their readers.
Step 8 — Collaborate with Complementary Local Businesses
Identify local businesses serving the same target customers but not competing directly. Offer content collaboration that benefits both — co-create an article, cross-recommend on each other’s websites, or build a joint service package.
Natural collaboration examples:
- Dental clinic + pharmacy → cross-recommend on service pages
- Wedding organiser + photographer + salon → create a “Wedding Checklist [City]” page together
- Gym + supplement shop + sports clinic → joint health guide
Step 9 — Guest Post on Local Community Blogs
Many Indonesian cities have active community blogs, local news portals, or hobby community websites. Offering to write quality content for free is widely accepted as a way to earn local backlinks.
Topics that tend to get accepted:
- Practical tips relevant to your industry that are useful for local readers
- How-to guides with no direct promotion
- Opinion or analysis on local industry trends
Weeks 7–8: Reclaim and Leverage
Step 10 — Find and Claim Unlinked Brand Mentions
Search your business name on Google to find websites that already mention you but don’t include a link. Contacting these site managers to request a link is far easier than asking for brand-new links — they’re already familiar with your business.
Search query: "Your Business Name" -site:your-website.com
Step 11 — Reclaim Broken Links to Old URLs
If your business has ever moved domains, changed URLs, or deleted old pages, some previously earned backlinks may now point to 404 error pages. Use Google Search Console → Coverage report to find errors, then contact the backlink sources to update the link to your current URL.
60-Day Calendar
| Week | Activity | Target Links |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kadin/HIPMI registration + .go.id submit | 2–3 links |
| 2 | Industry association registration | 2–3 links |
| 3 | Create linkable asset content | Content foundation |
| 4 | Content distribution + media pitch | 1–3 links |
| 5 | Identify & contact local events | 1–2 links |
| 6 | Local media pitch + follow-up | 2–4 links |
| 7 | Complementary business collaboration | 2–3 links |
| 8 | Unlinked mentions + broken link audit | 2–5 links |
| Total | 14–23 quality local backlinks |

Local Link Building — Common Questions
Why do local backlinks carry more weight than general backlinks for local SEO?
Backlinks from local sources — regional news sites, area business directories, local industry associations — carry geographic context that strengthens your location signals for Google. Google uses backlink sources as one way to verify that your business has genuine presence and relevance in a specific area.
How many local backlinks do I need to compete in the Local Pack?
There's no fixed number. Audit competitors appearing in the Local Pack for your main keyword using Ahrefs or Semrush — note their backlink count and quality, then target that as your benchmark. For tier-2 and tier-3 cities in Indonesia, 20–50 quality local backlinks is highly competitive.
Do backlinks from .go.id domains carry more authority than regular domains?
Yes, significantly. Backlinks from Indonesian government domains carry very high authority and are treated as strong trust signals by Google. Municipal websites, industry agencies, and official local bodies are premium backlink sources that most local businesses never pursue.
How long before new local backlinks start affecting rankings?
New backlinks are typically crawled and indexed within 1–4 weeks. Ranking impact usually appears 4–12 weeks after the link is live. Backlinks from high-authority sources like national media or .go.id domains tend to move the needle faster than smaller local sources.
Is buying backlinks from link-building services safe?
Not recommended — especially from PBN (Private Blog Network) services. Google gets better at detecting unnatural link patterns every year. Paid links from non-transparent services can trigger manual penalties that are very difficult to recover from. Organic link building takes longer but doesn't carry existential risk.
