Optimise Your GBP in 30 Minutes — 2026 Guide

More than 56% of local businesses haven’t claimed their Google Business Profile — which means their ready-to-buy customers are finding competitors instead.[^1] GBP is the most effective free marketing asset available to any local business, and most of the competition isn’t even using it properly.

These eight steps can be completed in 30 minutes if you have your business information and photos ready.

Before You Start

  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • You’ll need: A Google account, internet access, business photos (minimum 5)

Step 1 — Claim and Verify Your Profile

Open business.google.com and sign in with your business Google account. Search for your business name. If a profile already exists — Google often auto-creates profiles from Maps data — click “Claim this business.” If nothing appears, click “Add your business to Google” and follow the registration steps.

After entering basic information (name, address, category), Google will ask you to verify ownership. The most common method is a postcard sent to your business address containing a 5-digit code you enter within 30 days. Some businesses get faster options: phone, SMS, or a video call with a Google representative. Choose the fastest available option.

An unverified profile cannot appear in the Local Pack — Google only ranks profiles that have been confirmed as legitimate.[^4] This step is not optional.

Important: Use the exact same business name as it appears on your physical signage, business registration, or legal documents. Inconsistent names are one of the most common reasons profiles get rejected or suspended.

Step 2 — Complete Every Field — Leave Nothing Blank

After verification, open the GBP dashboard and go to “Edit profile.” Fill in every available field — nothing should be left empty.

Fields that must be complete:

  • Business name (matching your physical signage)
  • Primary and secondary categories (covered in Step 3)
  • Full address including building or unit number if applicable
  • Service area (for businesses serving a defined area)
  • Phone number (active and answered)
  • Website (full URL including https://)
  • Operating hours including holidays
  • Year established
  • Business attributes (WiFi, parking, accessibility, payment methods, etc.)

Google treats profile completeness as a quality signal. A fully-completed profile scores higher internally and directly affects your position in Maps.

Step 3 — Choose the Right Business Category (Most Often Wrong)

Your primary GBP category is the single most influential field in your entire profile — more impactful than your business name, more impactful than your description. It determines which searches can trigger your listing.

Always select the most specific category available. Generic categories miss the searches that matter most.

Common category mistakes:

Business TypeWrong CategoryCorrect Category
Dental clinicMedical ClinicDentist
Hair salonBeauty SalonHair Salon
Motorcycle workshopAuto Repair ShopMotorcycle Repair Shop
Padang restaurantRestaurantPadang Restaurant

After selecting your primary category, add secondary categories — up to 9, but only genuinely relevant ones. A dental clinic might add: Teeth Whitening Service, Orthodontist, Cosmetic Dentist. Don’t add unrelated categories just to appear broader.

Pro tip: Search your main keyword + city on Google Maps and check what primary category the top 3 results use. If theirs differs from yours for the same type of business, you’re likely miscategorised.

Step 4 — Write a Keyword-Rich Business Description

The business description allows up to 750 characters. This isn’t just “about us” text — it’s strategic space to plant local keywords that help Google understand what your business does and where it serves.

Effective description structure:

  1. First sentence: Primary service + city/area name (read by both the algorithm and humans)
  2. Sentences 2–3: Unique specialisation or competitive advantage
  3. Sentences 4–5: Additional services or specific customer focus
  4. Last sentence: Soft call to action with contact method

The description is not as ranking-critical as your category, but keywords in it help Google validate your relevance — and more importantly, it’s what prospective customers read before deciding to contact you.

Avoid: URLs, phone numbers, or superlative claims (“best in Indonesia”, “#1”) in the description. Google can reject or remove descriptions that violate these terms.

Step 5 — Upload Photos Correctly (File Names + Geo-Tags)

Businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than those without photos — according to Google’s own data.[^2] Photos are not decoration. Photos drive conversions.

Photo types you must have:

  • Cover photo: Representative exterior shot, 16:9 ratio, minimum 720×405px
  • Logo: White or transparent background, 1:1 ratio, minimum 250×250px
  • Exterior shots: Daytime and evening, with signage clearly visible
  • Interior: Inside atmosphere, cleanliness, workspace
  • Service/product photos: Food, products for sale, or service in progress
  • Team photos: Owner or staff — significantly improves trust signals

Rename your files before uploading:

Change camera file names (IMG_20240315.jpg) to keyword-containing names:

  • dental-clinic-bandung-treatment-room.jpg
  • motorcycle-workshop-surabaya-service-process.jpg

Add geo-tags to photos: Use Geoimgr (web-based, free) to embed GPS coordinates matching your business location into photo metadata before uploading.

Upload a minimum of 10 photos to start. Continue adding — profiles with 100+ photos consistently outperform those with only 10.

Step 6 — Add Services, Products, and Prices

Most business owners skip this step — and it’s a costly miss. The Services and Products features in GBP are indexed separately from your main description. Every service you add creates an additional ranking opportunity.

When adding services, don’t just list the name — add a 50–150 character description for each one. When adding products (for retail businesses), include a photo, category, price range, and short description. Profiles with visible prices get 20% more clicks because they help customers filter before contacting.

Step 7 — Activate Messaging and Connect WhatsApp

Indonesia has 112 million active WhatsApp users — ranking 3rd globally after India and Brazil.[^3] Your customers are already there. The GBP messaging feature can route directly to WhatsApp Business.

How to activate messaging:

  1. In your GBP dashboard, click “Messages” in the left menu
  2. Enable “Accept messages”
  3. Set up an automatic welcome message

Effective welcome message: “Hi! Thanks for reaching out to [Business Name]. How can we help you? Please describe what you need and we’ll respond within 1 hour.”

Monitor your response time — Google awards a “Fast responder” badge to businesses that consistently respond within an hour, which increases trust and CTR.

If you can’t respond consistently, don’t activate this feature. Unanswered messages damage your reputation more than having no chat option at all.

Step 8 — Publish Your First GBP Post

GBP posts appear directly in Google search results — below your main profile information. They’re free, they’re indexed, and 90% of businesses never use them.

How to create a post:

  1. In the GBP dashboard, click “Add update” → “Add post”
  2. Choose type: Update (general news), Offer (promotion), Event, or Product
  3. Upload a photo (required — posts without photos almost never get clicked)
  4. Write 150–300 words of text
  5. Add a CTA button: “Call now”, “Book online”, “Learn more”
  6. Click “Publish”

Standard posts remain active for 7 days then expire automatically — meaning you need to post weekly to keep your profile “fresh” in Google’s eyes. Stale profiles lose ranking priority against consistently updated ones.

7 Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Keyword-stuffing your business name — Writing “Dental Clinic Budi — Best Cheap Dentist 24hrs” violates Google’s policy and can result in profile suspension.
  2. Stock photos or other businesses’ photos — Google increasingly detects duplicate images.
  3. Category too generic — Always choose the most specific available.
  4. Not responding to reviews — BrightLocal data shows 88% of consumers prefer businesses that respond to all reviews.[^5]
  5. Inaccurate or outdated operating hours — Customers arriving when you’re closed rarely return.
  6. Inconsistent NAP across platforms — Name, address, and phone number must match exactly on GBP, your website, and every directory. See NAP consistency guide for the full audit process.
  7. Never posting — Even one post every two weeks is vastly better than none. Consistency beats intensity.

Realistic Timeline

PeriodWhat to Expect
Weeks 1–2Profile re-indexed, impressions up 10–30%
Weeks 3–4Starting to appear for long-tail specific searches
Month 2Significant increase in direction requests and calls
Months 2–3Beginning to enter Local Pack for secondary keywords
Months 3–6Potential Top 3 Local Pack for primary keywords

Factors that accelerate this timeline: weekly posting, consistent new reviews, and a fast website with relevant local content.

Google Business Profile — Common Questions

Is Google Business Profile really free?

Yes, completely free. Google charges nothing to create, claim, or manage a Google Business Profile. All you need is a Google account and an internet connection. No subscription, no paid tiers.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Postcard verification usually takes 5–14 business days to arrive. Some businesses get instant verification options via phone or video call if Google already has data about them. You can start completing your profile while waiting for verification.

Can an online business with no physical address use GBP?

Yes, with conditions. Service-area businesses that serve customers at their location (caterers, contractors, photographers) can register as a Service Area Business without displaying a physical address. Pure online businesses with no physical service area don't qualify.

Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps even though I registered?

The most common reasons: profile not yet verified, wrong primary business category, incomplete profile, or competitors with stronger prominence signals (reviews, photos, posts). Complete all 8 steps in this guide and allow 2–8 weeks for the changes to take effect.

Can I manage multiple branches from one GBP account?

Yes. Google supports managing multiple locations from one Business Manager account. Each branch needs a separate profile, separate verification, and content tailored to that location. Businesses with 10+ locations can use bulk verification.
